SEDL Promotes HK's Shipping Services in Greece
The Secretary for Economic Development and Labour, Mr Stephen Ip, today (7 June) begins his visit programme in Greece to promote Hong Kong's development as a shipping hub. He delivered a keynote address on "Economic and Maritime Developments in Asia" at the Maritime Policy Forum of the Posidonia 2004 International Shipping Exhibition this morning.
Held biennially in Greece, the Posidonia International Shipping Exhibition is a major international event on the maritime industry calendar. Mr Ip is leading a Hong Kong delegation to attend the event in support of the "Hong Kong Pavilion" exhibition at Posidonia 2004 which is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council (MIC), the Marine Department and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. The exhibition showcases the comprehensive maritime services provided in Hong Kong and promotes Hong Kong's development as an international shipping centre in Asia. This is the second time that Hong Kong has set up the "Hong Kong Pavilion" in the Exhibition.
Participants of the "Hong Kong Pavilion" include COSCO (Hong Kong) Shipping Co. Ltd, Eurasia International (China) Limited Partnership, Hong Kong Container Terminal Operators Association Ltd., Hong Kong Shipowners Association, Hong Kong Shippers' Council, HUD Group, International Maritime Carriers Limited (IMC), and Wallem Group Ltd.
During his stay in Greece, Mr Ip will meet with the Greek Minister of Merchant Shipping, Mr Manolis Kefaloyannis, to exchange views on maritime issues and to discuss the latest shipping developments in Hong Kong and Greece. Mr Ip will also meet with the Minister of Transports and Telecommunications, Mr Mihalis Liapis, during his stay in Athens.
Other members of the delegation include Mr K. H. Koo and Mr M. H. Liang who are both shipowners and members of the Maritime Industry Council. The Marine Department is represented by the Assistant Director of Marine, Mr Lee Wai-kuen.

Following the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Greek Prime Minister, Mr Kostas Karamanlis (2nd from left), visited the Hong Kong Pavilion.
At the Hong Kong Pavilion, Mr Kostas exchanged views with Mr Ip (3rd from right), Mr K H Koo (1st from right) and Mr M H Liang (2nd from right), both members of MIC. Mr Kostas, who had not come to Hong Kong before, said he was delighted to visit the Hong Kong Pavilion to see its latest shipping developments.
