Hong Kong is an associate member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and participates in various IMO activities and other international fora. All the IMO Conventions adopted internationally are also applicable in Hong Kong.

The presence of major international maritime organisations and local shipping associations, such as the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and Nautical Institute (Hong Kong Branch), facilitates the coordination of the shipping community.
